Abstract-Niwayama
In this presentation, I would like to focus on a blog entitled ‘Canadian Nikkei’. ‘Canadian Nikkei’ is a new term and it still seems to be unfamiliar among Japanese Canadians. These days it is common among Japanese Canadians to find a partner who has a different ethnic background. Intermarriage is inevitable while they live in a very small and scattered community. Therefore, the population has grown smaller year by year. This situation leads Japanese Canadians to a new perspective on self-identity. Until recently, the word Nikkei has been used mainly for material things and places, rather than for persons. In my analysis, the term ‘Canadian Nikkei’ is an experimental trial by one of the community activists. If the term ‘Canadian Nikkei’ becomes prevalent among Japanese Canadians, they would identify themselves as ‘Canadian Nikkei’ as well as ‘Japanese Canadian’. How will Japanese Canadians accept and share the term ‘Canadian Nikkei’? This question is a beginning of my research, and I am going to work on this issue.
